Most people would subconsciously hire an
attractive person before an unattractive person. Research has shown that
attractive children are disciplined more than unattractive children. Which
means right from the beginning the attractive children will have more
confidence and are getting a better start to life. They also make friends more
easily. Attractive people incite positive feelings in
others, and those positive feelings tend to make us see them more favorably
than non-attractive people. Based on those positive feelings, I think we give
attractive people a leg up over others- whether in work or social situations so they have more chances in life. With or without intention we as teachers as employers are biased towards then.
Some people don’t pay attention that when they tend to allow their impressions and emotions to control their decisions they might get deceived. Having good appearance became one of the important factors that give people chances for being employed or treated in a different way. This is considered as additional credit for them. This might be unfair for other people, since it is not our choices to be nice or not but we choose to have a good personality and well prepared one. I think that people are giving extra credits without using their minds to differentiate among people based on their competencies.
ReplyDeleteResearch does show that attractive people have higher chances of being employed. People prefer working and dealing with good looking colleagues, and if we come to think of it we also do in our daily lives. But what grabbed my attention and got me thinking is: Do teachers treat students differently based on appearance?
ReplyDeleteI think that attractive people really do have advantages over those who are unattractive, and most people are more likely to give them the benefit over others, they do incite positive feelings in others which allow us to see them as more favorable for a work even if they have the same intent as others. This is as you said Farah an extra credit for them every where they go and have a huge role in their path to success in life.
ReplyDeleteIn schools attractive children are treated better by their teachers and parents, they are more disciplined, also the same thing in society....they are perceived to be more intelligent and social and other children like them better. In fact, this apply for every thing in life not only to human, if you have to choose between two sandwiches you will choose the more attractive one even if the other one would taste better.
Finally it's unfair and funny to treat people based on their attractiveness because this is some thing natural and not learned and can have a little or no effect on the quality of work.
Attractive people definitely have an advantage. They do better in life, at work, and have lots of friends. But that's because they typically have more Confidence. Confidence makes a world of difference in every aspect of life.
ReplyDeletein addition, i think it's not fair to treat people according to their outer appearance, where human don't choose their shape or gender, but they choose their personality, values and achievements...and that's what we should judge people for.
Attractiveness has a negative advantage at the same time, attractive poeple may face troubles in communicating with others, since other may feel jealous from them and act based on their negative feeling inside.
